RESUME WRITING TIPS FOR ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING TECH POSITIONS

When creating a resume for EET positions it’s important to detail, or categorize, your electronics skills and then to support them with transferable skills.

To illustrate, we’ll look at an abbreviated section from each of Dee’s before and after resumes. Dee had completed an A.A.S. Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology from a national school and had limited experience as a bench-tech and unrelated experience working as a stocker for a wholesale buying club.

Take a moment and read a section from Dee’s before resume.

Put yourself in an employer’s shoes and imagine that you are looking for a top-notch Test Technician. What impression do you have of Dee’s tech skills?

If you need to to hire a tech for an extremely busy position that may require training other techs or servicing many internal production departments, does Dee look well qualified when you read the section from her before resume shown above?

Now, let’s look at an abbreviated section from Dee’s after resume. Does the after resume shown below present Dee as being much better qualified for a Tech position?

Dee had left out the Testing position for Precor and the Testing/Wiring position for Innovation Technology because they were part-time, temp positions and she didn’t think they mattered. However, you can see that by including the electronics skills Dee had gained from the temp positions she looks better qualified.

Here's a great success story from Dawn Mitchell, whose before and after resumes appear in the EET resume book. I worked with her and other students at a well known national technical college while creating the EET and CAD/Drafting resume books. Dawn's resume appears under the fictitious name of Dan Parkins. As with all testimonials, please keep in mind that your results will vary depending on your skills and the prevailing job market and wage conditions in which you are seeking employment.

"These strategies have worked for me twice. Using my first resume I sent out 2, landed 2 interviews and accepted a $30,000 position with a $2,000 sign-on bonus. And, I was a new graduate! In my next move, I used the same resume to apply and be hired for a position with a major international avionics company that started at $37,000. Within 2 years my salary has grown to $50,000. The ProvenResumes System really does result in great resumes that can help you land a job you love! Dawn Mitchell, Field Engineer."

If you have extensive experience in the Electronics field and are seeking positions in the $20,000 to $100,000+ range, then I recommend that you purchase my newest resume book, Proven Resumes: Strategies That Increase Salaries. It is written for higher income and experience levels and includes over 2,000 skills and skill lists for 40 industries. I recommend that you supplement this booklet with the EET booklet (to obtain industry specific resumes with keywords targeted for this field). For a detailed, section by section description click Proven Resumes Book in the left hand column.

If you are a recent graduate of an EET program and have limited experience in this field, then I recommend that you purchase my Electronic Tech resume book which is titled,
6 Easy Steps to Create Resumes and Cover Letters for Electronic Engineering Techs. This booklet will teach you how to market your EET training and combine it with past work experience from other career fields. This booklet works well for job seekers in the $8 to $16 an hour range who have limited job experience.

By using the EET resume examples along with the 400 skill headings and sample sentences in
6 Easy Steps To Create Resumes and Cover Letters for EET Students, both Dawn and Dee were able to substantially strengthen their resumes. If you are a recent graduate from an Electronics program, this booklet provides resume, cover / thank you letter, and scannable resume examples written only for this field.

The Electronic Tech resume book opens by analyzing three sets of full-length resumes and teaching you how they were improved. It then takes you through 6 easy steps to create your resume and provides detailed step by step worksheets that guide you every step of the way.

The first step is to help you list all of your skills and skill lists are provided for 12 of the most common career fields (this allows you to market both your technical skills and skills gained from other fields besides electronic engineering tech). In the second step, you're then guided in determining if skill headings or job titles will market you the best. Many job seekers have titles that are unrelated to the jobs they want. In this instance, they are better off marketing skills.

In the third step, you're shown how to analyze want ads to identify keywords and experience employers want and are shown how to incorporate them into your resume. In the forth step, you are guided in selecting which titles and skill headings you've developed that are the best match for the ad - you then use these in your resume.

In the fifth step, you begin describing each skill heading or job title you'll use in your resume. To supplement this step you're provided with 12 Questions to help you fully describe your skills as illustrated by the last example in red above.

In the sixth step, you complete your objective, employment and education sections. Again, you're provided with worksheets for each step and examples of how to complete each section of your resume are included.

Two examples are provided that show you how to target your resume for specific positions. Targeting your resume often makes the difference between landing or not landing interviews.

You are also provided with full-length before and after cover letters and you are shown how to analyze ads to develop powerful keyword headings for your cover letter paragraphs. After the cover letter section you are provided with full-length thank you letters. The thank-you letter examples will show you how to remind the employer of your top skills and to market additional skills not mentioned in your resume or during an interview.

The last four pages of the book cover how to convert your nicely formatted resume into scannable and ASCII format.
